JD 1 Branch 12 Repair - North Fork and Raymond Twps, Stearns County
In 2016 the Board finalized plans for repair of JD 1 Branch 12 and its forks and spurs. Soil boring and probe information, coupled with original plans from the early 1900's showed numerous public road crossings and private crossings that were misaligned with the original grade of the ditch. Typically these structures are placed at the improper elevations at the time of road maintenance, or may not have been properly placed at the time of construction. The Board will seek to replace the crossings at the proper elevations to repair the ditch to its originally intended hydrologic efficiency.
The Board has also chosen to incorporate the recommendations of a culvert sizing study that it conducted in 2012. The work was funded in part by cash and in-kind contributions from the NFCRWD ($ 5,500 in-kind, $ 5,500 cash) and in part by a grant from the 2010 Clean Water Fund Conservation Drainage Program ($ 33,000). The Board requested the services of Houston Engineering (HEI) to carry out a study to find solutions which would reduce flooding problems within the JD 1 watershed, as well as downstream along the North Fork Crow River. The plan is based on the re-sizing of r existing culverts within the watershed to reduce peak flow rates, flood damages and erosion potential downstream.
The repair plan incorporates the evidence found to determine the "As Constructed Subsequently Improved (ACSIC)" grade line as well as the culvert sizing recommendations to determine the scope of work to take place. The District will work with the County and Township road authorities to align the existing road crossings with the approved ACSIC to provide an efficient ditch that also reduces peak flows downstream.
